Highway 17: Back on Track Following Bissett Creek Collision

A single-vehicle collision early Friday morning resulted in the closure of Highway 17 between Deep River and Mattawa, Ontario for several hours.

According to the Ontario Provincial Police, the crash occurred around 2 a.m. in the United Townships of Head, Clara, and Maria. The lone occupant of the vehicle sustained serious but non-life-threatening injuries and had to be extricated by the Mattawa Fire Department.

Highway 17 reopens after crash near Bissett Creek

Police Constable Shawn Peever said the vehicle suffered significant damage. Technical collision investigators remained on the scene as Highway 17 was shut down in both directions.

Detours rerouted traffic from Ottawa to North Bay through Algonquin Park until the highway reopened around 9:30 am, according to an OPP update.

Authorities have not released details on what caused the early morning crash. The injured driver was transported to hospital and is expected to recover. Police continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the collision that led to the extended closure of the key highway.
