Tragic Taylorsville Accident Claims Life of Hickory Woman, NCSHP Reports

Taylorsville, NC – A 76-year-old woman from Hickory was killed in a head-on car crash in Taylorsville on Friday afternoon, according to the North Carolina State Highway Patrol.

Barbara Ruppard Causey was driving westbound on U.S. 64 in a 2008 Honda Civic when she crossed over the centerline and collided head-on with an eastbound 2018 GMC Sierra pickup truck.

Causey’s vehicle overturned after impact and struck a utility pole. She died at the scene from her injuries sustained in the accident.

The driver of the pickup, Robert Lewis Phelps of Granite Falls, had a child passenger who was transported to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

Impairment does not appear to be a factor in the crash, according to highway patrol. No charges will be filed against Phelps.

The cause of the fatal head-on collision remains under investigation.
