Chelmsford, MA – A major highway in Chelmsford has reopened following a serious head-on collision earlier today.

According to Massachusetts State Police, Route 495 northbound was temporarily closed due to a violent crash between two vehicles around 10 a.m. this morning.
A car traveling southbound crossed over the median into oncoming northbound lanes, colliding head-on with another car. The impact shut down the northbound side at the rest stop as emergency crews responded.
Traffic backed up significantly to Route 2A in Littleton during the closure. The southbound side was also briefly closed to allow a medical helicopter to transport one victim from the scene. Their condition remains unknown.
Police have not released any further details yet as the investigation into the major crash continues. All lanes of Route 495 have since reopened to traffic in both directions after extensive closures due to the serious nature of the head-on collision.
Authorities continue to piece together how the southbound car ended up in the wrong direction prior to the violent impact that prompted a major emergency response and traffic delays in the area this morning.
