The Toyota Fortuner SUV has witnessed a massive 277% price hike since its original launch in India back in 2009. The range-topping Fortuner GR-S variant now costs Rs. 51.44 lakhs, up from Rs. 18.54 lakhs in 2009.
Must Read:
When first introduced, Toyota aimed to sell 2,000 Fortuner units annually at its then starting price of Rs. 18.45 lakhs. The SUV swiftly became an aspirational icon with unmatched popularity.
Successive price hikes, rising input costs, taxes and lack of direct rivals like the discontinued Ford Endeavour have fueled the Fortuner’s price growth. The special Legender and GR-S variants carry even higher premiums.
On-road prices of the flagship Fortuner GR-S 4×4 exceed Rs. 60 lakhs today, making it a very exclusive proposition.
Under the hood, the Fortuner offers a choice of 2.7L petrol and 2.8L diesel engines mated to manual and automatic transmissions. 4×4 variants get rugged off-roading capabilities.
While the exponential 277% price increase over 14 years is eye-watering, the Fortuner’s aspirational appeal and loyalty remain undiminished. However, its current elite pricing may limit accessibility for many buyers going forward.
