Tragic Loss: 26-Year-Old Polk City Man Killed in State Road 33 Crash

Polk County, FL – A 26-year-old Polk City man was killed and 2 others were injured in a 3-vehicle accident on State Road 33 in Polk County on Tuesday night.

The fatal crash occurred around 8:15 pm just west of Stevens Drive, where SR 33 curves near Mud Lake, according to the Polk County Sheriff’s Office.

Charles Vanduyn, 26, was pronounced dead at the scene. He was driving a Toyota Camry southbound when for unknown reasons he crossed the center line and collided with a Nissan Altima.

The Altima driver, Cindy Whittington, 51, and Ford F-150 driver Charlie Pickren III, 34, were hospitalized with injuries.

After hitting the Altima, Vanduyn’s Camry struck Pickren’s pickup head-on, causing the truck to catch fire. Pickren was ejected in the collision.

SR 33 was shut down for approximately 4 hours during the investigation and cleanup. The events leading to Vanduyn crossing into oncoming traffic remain unclear.
