Tata Motors has entered the league of car manufacturers expanding its offerings. The Indian company recently unveiled plans for four new electric SUVs: the Nexon EV, Harrier EV, Punch EV, and Curb SUV Coupe. N. Chandrasekaran, Chairman of Tata Motors, hinted at introducing a robust SUV akin to the Jeep. This suggests the arrival of a fresh lifestyle SUV segment, possibly rivaling the Mahindra Thar and Maruti Suzuki Jimny.

During Tata Motors’ 78th annual general meeting, N. Chandrasekaran engaged with shareholders, indicating the company’s assessment of diverse segments, including the Jeep-like sturdy SUV category. He shared that Tata Motors is exploring various possibilities, with a focus on launching a fitting product in the appropriate segment and space, one with its unique character rather than a derivative.
As per reports, Tata Motors is set to debut a new crossover coupe named “Curb” in 2024, introducing a novel mid-size SUV segment. Further into the timeline, by 2025, Tata aims to reintroduce the iconic Sierra lifestyle SUV, possibly featuring off-road capabilities.
The demand for affordable lifestyle SUVs is evident, as showcased by Mahindra’s success with over 100,000 Thar units sold since its 2020 launch. Impressively, Tata has received 68,000+ bookings for the new Thar, resulting in a waiting period exceeding a year. In a parallel endeavor, Maruti Suzuki’s Jimny, featuring robust 4×4 capabilities, has already amassed 50,000+ bookings for the compact SUV.

Tata Motors has previously ventured into lifestyle SUVs boasting 4×4 capabilities, such as the Safari and Sierra. Moreover, the company presented the Harrier EV with 4-wheel drive capabilities at the 2023 Auto Expo. Furthermore, Tata enjoys access to the capabilities of Land Rover, expanding its potential offerings.
