Tragedy struck on Thursday morning when a collision involving a 2002 Honda Civic and a semi-tractor trailer claimed the lives of two South Elgin High School students and left three others injured in Bartlett. The incident occurred around 7 a.m. at the junction of IL Route 25 and Kenyon Road, resulting in a devastating scene.

The male driver of the Mack semi-tractor trailer was transported to a nearby hospital and is reportedly in stable condition. The Honda Civic carried four occupants, all South Elgin High School students. Two females from the car were rushed to a nearby hospital in critical condition, with one of them later succumbing to her injuries. A third female passenger was pronounced dead at the accident site. The fourth female passenger from the Honda Civic was transported to a nearby hospital and is currently in stable condition.
Emergency responders from various departments, including Elgin, Fox River, Geneva, Carol Stream, and St. Charles, quickly arrived at the scene. The cooperation among these teams was crucial as they worked to investigate and manage the situation. The South Elgin & Countryside Fire Department noted that they had to remove the roof of the Honda Civic to access the vehicle’s occupants.
The gravity of the incident prompted the activation of the School District U-46 Crisis Team at South Elgin High School. The Metropolitan Emergency Response and Investigative Team is lending its support to the Bartlett Police Department in the ongoing investigation. Authorities are still assessing the situation to determine the exact sequence of events that led to this tragic collision.
In a somber statement, the School District U-46 expressed their condolences and shared the unfortunate news. “It is with a heavy heart that we write about a loss in our South Elgin High School family,” the statement read. The district confirmed the loss of two students, while another is in critical condition under medical care, and the fourth student sustained non-life-threatening injuries.
While the names of the students were not shared out of respect for their families and the notification of next of kin, the school is offering emotional support to students, staff, and families through school social workers and counselors.
As the investigation continues, IL Route 25 remains closed between West Bartlett Road and Graham Road, reflecting the ongoing efforts of the authorities in managing the aftermath of this tragic incident.
