A section of the Queen Elizabeth Way in Hamilton, Ontario is currently closed due to a dramatic vehicle fire at the base of the Burlington Skyway bridge. The blaze engulfed the vehicle and prompted the closure of all Niagara-bound lanes starting at Woodward Avenue.
Toronto-bound QEW traffic has also been reduced to just one lane near Nikola Tesla Boulevard because of an unrelated incident. As a result, massive delays and backlogs are expected in both directions on this vital transportation corridor.
Drivers planning to use the QEW through Hamilton are being advised to seek alternate routes until the mess can be cleared. Emergency crews remain on the scene working to extinguish the vehicle fire and investigate the separate Toronto-bound issue.
Authorities have not provided details on what caused the vehicle fire or whether there were any injuries. The closures will likely remain in effect for an extended period as crews work to reopen the highway safely. Officials are warning the public to anticipate heavy delays in the area and avoid it if possible.
