Eyewitnesses report the fatal crash occurred on Ago Okota Palace Way when a police officer and a Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) official tried to forcefully take the steering wheel from the driver of a private Sienna car.
In the ensuing struggle for control, the car collided at high speed with a commercial tricycle (keke) carrying a pregnant woman and her two children. The woman, her children, the police officer and the tricycle driver were all killed on impact.
After the crash, police officers arriving on scene began shooting sporadically and dispersing tear gas, preventing witnesses from approaching. The woman’s husband reportedly fainted upon seeing the bloody scene.
While details are still emerging, the Lagos State police command has confirmed an investigation is underway. Protesting keke drivers blocked traffic around Ago Palace Way to demonstrate against the tragic incident.
The exact death toll remains unconfirmed, but eyewitness accounts suggest 5 fatalities resulting from the struggle over the Sienna car. The police assert the situation is now under control. Traffic delays are expected to persist near the accident site.
