Hilo, Hawaii – On Saturday, September 2, 2023, Hawaii Island police launched an investigation into a tragic traffic collision that claimed the life of a man.

At 12:36 a.m. that Saturday, South Hilo patrol officers responded swiftly to a single-vehicle traffic accident on Kilauea Avenue. Preliminary findings indicate that a 1990 Yamaha motorcycle was traveling southbound along Kilauea Avenue, just before reaching the Puainako intersection. Tragically, the motorcycle crossed the center line and collided head-on with a utility pole.
The motorcyclist, a 45-year-old male resident of Mountain View, was not wearing a helmet at the time of the accident. He was found unresponsive at the scene and immediately transported to Hilo Medical Center by ambulance. Sadly, despite medical efforts, he was pronounced deceased at 1:40 a.m.
To respect the privacy of the victim’s family, his identity is being withheld temporarily, pending positive identification and notification of next of kin.
Speed and inattention appear to be the primary contributing factors in this tragic crash, according to preliminary reports. An autopsy has been scheduled to determine the exact cause of death. Additionally, the East Hawai’i Traffic Enforcement Unit has initiated a Coroner’s Inquest investigation in connection with this incident.
