SANTA BARBARA, CA – A multi-car crash on Highway 101 in Santa Barbara early Tuesday morning resulted in 6 people being injured, 1 seriously, according to authorities.

The accident occurred just south of the Carrillo Street off-ramp shortly after midnight. At least 3 vehicles were involved in the collision that took place in the southbound lanes under unclear circumstances.
First responders from the Santa Barbara Fire Department arrived to extract occupants trapped in 2 of the crashed vehicles. In total, 6 patients were transported to the hospital, including 1 with serious wounds.
A section of guardrail ended up on the off-ramp after being sheared during the multi-vehicle impact. Traffic was reduced to 1 lane as emergency crews tended to the injured at the scene.
The cause of the middle-of-the-night Highway 101 pile-up remains under investigation. Drivers are cautioned to avoid distractions, tailgating, and speeding, and to adjust driving habits to match road conditions.
