Tragedy struck on a Charlotte roadway last night when a motorcyclist was killed in a violent collision with a car.

According to Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police, 49-year-old Jean Kelly Allen Jr. was riding his 2007 Harley Davidson northwest on Carowinds Boulevard around 8:15 p.m. As he approached the intersection at Choate Circle, a 1998 Honda Accord turned onto Carowinds Boulevard, directly into the path of the motorcycle.
The resulting crash was devastating. Allen’s Harley Davidson slammed into the Honda’s driver’s side with tremendous force. When first responders arrived, they found Allen’s motorcycle shattered across the roadway. Allen himself was rushed to Atrium Main, but did not survive his injuries.
The driver of the Honda Accord escaped with only minor wounds and was transported to Atrium Health Steele Creek.
Investigators believe speed and possible impairment may have been factors in the motorcyclist’s actions. Allen was also not wearing a helmet, which likely contributed to the severity of his injuries. Toxicology results are still pending as police continue to piece together the circumstances around this fatal crash.
For those who knew Jean Kelly Allen Jr., the news comes as a terrible shock. In an instant, a life was tragically cut short on a routine evening ride through the city. As friends and family grieve, many will certainly be reminded of just how precious life really is.
