Must Read:
In a personal essay published in The Players’ Tribune, the 27-year-old opened up about her secret mental health struggles leading up to a title defense that year. Feeling overwhelmed by pressure and expectations, Lee became fixated on making weight for the fight. When her extreme weight cut was not going as planned, Lee spiraled mentally and could only see two options – either fail to make weight and disappoint everyone, or remove herself from the situation entirely via suicide.
After unsuccessfully trying to self-harm in other ways, Lee got in her car late at night and intentionally drove at top speed into a guardrail. The resulting crash left her car overturned and shredded with glass. For months after the incident, only Lee’s husband knew the truth.
Now six years later, Lee is bravely sharing her story of hitting rock bottom in hopes that it will help others experiencing similar mental health issues feel less alone. She has channeled her difficult journey into launching a non-profit called Fightstory to provide a supportive community for people to share their personal struggles.
Lee’s courage to open up about her suicide attempt and encourage mental health awareness is inspiring. Her story emphasizes that even superstar athletes can silently battle dark thoughts, and highlights the importance of providing compassion and support to those struggling.
