A major multi-vehicle accident has shut down Interstate 75 southbound near Chattanooga, Tennessee on Tuesday evening.
According to Chattanooga Police, the crash occurred around 6:30 pm near Mile Marker 3.4, causing complete closure of the southbound interstate at East Brainerd Road.
Police report at least two serious injuries resulted from the pileup. Traffic investigators are at the scene working to clear damaged vehicles and debris.
All southbound traffic is being diverted at the East Brainerd exit until the wreckage can be cleared. This is causing major delays during the evening commute.
Authorities advise drivers in the vicinity to proceed with extreme caution and patience due to back-ups near the accident site. The cause of the crash remains under investigation.
For now, southbound I-75 is at a standstill as crews attend to the injured and restore traffic flow. The distressing news of life-threatening injuries casts a pall over the region on this Tuesday night.
