A woman was hospitalized after her car left the roadway and crashed down an embankment along the A38 Devon Expressway near Goodstone, England on Saturday afternoon.
The single-vehicle crash occurred on the eastbound side of the dual carriageway around 2:58 p.m. local time. One lane was closed initially, leading to major traffic delays.
By the afternoon, the entire eastbound side was shut down for accident investigation and cleanup. The closure caused gridlock with 10+ minute delays quickly turning into complete standstill conditions.
Emergency responders including police, paramedics and multiple fire crews attended the scene where the car had gone off the expressway and down a steep embankment.
Rescue workers extracted the female driver and transported her to the hospital for further treatment and observation. Her condition was not immediately known.
The eastbound A38 reopened around 6:22 p.m. after investigation work was completed. The circumstances surrounding the accident are under investigation.
